Get Your Emails Open and Read

In this issue of High Rankings Advisor–an email newsletter on search engine optimization–there’s inexplicably an article on email subject lines called How to Write Persuasive Subject Lines by Karon Thackston.

Ms. Thackston makes three suggestions to make your subject lines more compelling:

  1. Make an Offer,
  2. State a Benefit, and
  3. Evoke Curiosity

and backs them up with examples.

The information isn’t groundbreaking, but if you’re having trouble getting people to take action on your emails or your open rates are abysmal, then it’s news to you.

Learn more about how to make your subject lines more compelling.

    Hi Rich,

I have a question about this article. In other places, I've read that the subject line should somehow identify the sender (ie Terry Matlen's ADDitional News Oct Edition)so that people will know who it is coming from and not toss it or report it as spam.

In this article, it suggests eye catching subject lines which encourages the reader to open the email.

    What are your thoughts?

    Terry,

    You're absolutely right…kinda.

The "from" line is actually the most important factor (according to studies) in getting your email opened. The subject line comes in a close second.

Use your from line to brand your email, and put a compelling reason to open the email in your subject line, and you should see you opens increase.
