eBay / PayPal Scam: Digimax 130

Paypalforgery
If you received an email about your recent eBay purchase of a Digimax 130, you don’t need to bother clicking the Dispute Transaction link.

This is an all-too-common scam to get you to give up your PayPal login information, so don’t fall for it.

In the version I received, the Payment Details included:

Amount: $47.85 USD

Transaction ID: 2LC956793J776333Y

Subject: Digimax 130

The seller was named as Edward Harrell, eBay user ID: scratchandgnaw2, although if there really is an Edward Harrell of Springtown, Texas, you can be sure he had nothing to do with this.

  1. Hey Rich… You're back!

I haven't fallen for this one yet, but I almost got roped into what I think was a virus sent under the disguise of a Windows Explorer update. It looked exactly like an authentic windows update message! It indicated that I needed to install ErrorSafe (due to errors in my registry database or file system… yada yada). I didn't click ok, but I must have done something because Norton grabbed it and has since deleted all related files that were somehow on my computer.

I googled it and found a lot of people have unintentionally downloaded it and have had trouble removing some parts of it. Don't know how damaging it is, or even if it is a virus, but thought I'd throw it out there.

just got same email. Watch out for it.

  3. Jede says:

Hey Rich, I also received this email on PayPal with almost the exact info as you did. I did not click on the dipute transaction key -However it bothers me that I even opened it! Hey it looked legit! I knew nothing had been ordered using PayPal in months so should I worry about my bank info getting out? Thanks, J

  4. Teri says:

We don't have an account with paypal and we got the e-mail to. What's up with this? The info was the exact as yours. How can someone get a hold of paypal and find out how we can have an accout? If any one knows let me know.

  5. Lucy says:

I received the same E-mail but I don't have a PayPal account either. I already phoned my bank to confirm it hadn't posted as yet. Thank you for the warning.

  6. robert barker says:

Thanks. I sent a report to Paypal spoof but they have not responded. Finding your report was reassuring.

    Bob

  7. Hannah says:

Hi, thanx also! I clicked on the dispute thing, and it directs to a page which says the account has been canceled or something like it.
I also reported to Paypal (where I don't have an account) but no answer whatsoever.

  8. Anthony says:

I get these e-mails 2-3 times per day!

  9. Jeffrey Lee says:

The punishment should be death. These are foreigners are causing harm to civilians in this country. It's an act of war and as far as I'm concerned, they cause more harm to Americans within our borders that any Iraqi has.

  10. P. Lamb says:

I almost got caught up in this scam as well. I do not subscribe to Pay Pal either. Because I was frauded some years ago, I certainly keep on top of everything. I will be passing this on to friends and colleagues. Thank you so much for warnng us. This is a wonderful help and now I can relax while still keeping on my toes. Thank you again!

  11. Rich Brooks says:

    Jeffrey,

Um, seems like you have some anger issues here. Not sure why it has to be foreigners running this scam; there's certainly enough grifters here in the good 'ol US of A.

  12. Carolyn Geiger says:

There is a new phishing paypal scam. An official sounding e-mail comes and says someone from France is trying to use your account.I don't have an account either! The URL is paypal.shopaidss.com. I Reported it to spoof and they confirmed it is a phisher.Beware!

  13. sandi says:

I received the same email!!! thanks for the heads up!!!

  14. Angela Rose says:

Too bad there isnt some way (that i know of) to reply to these emails with a computer crashing virus attached. Would be nice to fight back.

  15. Wes says:

I go this same email today and have not used PayPal in years. I DID click the dispute link, and got a message from my computer's widows security protection thing that it is a "known phishing website" whatever that is, and advised me to close the page. So I did.

well here it is in october and it is still being passed around.I just got mine {Oct.19,2007}. Can't they be stopped from scaring people into a panic, like it did me?

  17. Betty Jean says:

On October 22 I received the same email listed as Edward Harrell as payee. Is there any way to cancel a PayPal account that was established years ago? I can't find any.

    Help if you can.

  18. Suzanne Derby says:

Rec'd scam on Digimax 130 from Ed Harrelman on Oct 10th and just found out on the 24th when I checked messages. I freaked out and contacted paypal them my bank a/c to find that it had not been touched. How can we let the general public know about this before they freak out too and waste at least an hour of time clarifying the problem?

  19. Don Wheezer says:

Received this same email on October 24th, 2007… hopefully clicking on dispute this transaction doesn't do anything looked legit to me.
WARNING!!! another scam…….lets line them up…..

  20. Ron says:

Received this same email on October 24th, 2007. I also hope clicking on dispute this transaction doesn't do anything, it did look legit.

    Ron.

  21. Pat Crawford says:

I received the Digimax 130 PayPal message today. My Norton antivirus didn't stop it. Does it carry any kind of virus? My PayPal account is inactive and I have notified my bank to stop the $147.85 transaction.

  22. bill says:

its going on, i received this same thing about Digimax 130 & e-bay today

  23. Linda says:

Guess it's still happening under different names. I received two emails today- one from belinda 1017 and another from jamesthomson thanking me for my purchase of a Digimax 130 for 47.85. I had no idea what a digimax 130 was. I'm rather technologically challenged. I too, clicked on the rebuttal link, but said the page was unavailable. Sure hope they aren't really taking money from my account. What Jerks!

  24. Heather says:

Glad to see I wasn't alone in the panicking and blindly clicking to dispute the transaction! I'm hoping I didn't do worse damage by clicking the link. I didn't see any info about what happens if you used the link though. Anyone know what it does?

  25. Rich Brooks says:

I don't believe clicking on the link will cause you harm (but no promises), but rather if you provide your PayPal username/password at this bogus site they'll then have it, and be able to log into your PayPal account and mess with it, perhaps locking you out or moving your money around, or purchasing products that will be charged to you.

  26. Tolik says:

    Hi,
Thanks for your helpful info, Rich! I received similar email from "pay pal"; seller: Cheryl Blake from Dover, DE. Purchase of Digimax 130 for the same amount as people above. Didn't follow dispute resolution link because I thought it was a virus.
    Thanks again,

    Tolik

  27. phreedo says:

Same as above, we received one from Cheryl Blake as well. This article was the 1st link I opened looking for info on what a Digimax 130 is….saved me investigative time.

    Big thanks.

  28. jerry says:

My son received the same email for the DigiMax 130 from Cheryl Blake as well. Doing a quick web search, brought me to this page….
    Very timely.

    Cheers.

    Jerry

  29. Julie says:

Cheryl's getting around. I googled "digimax 300" and I found this link. I was very glad that I found it. Thanks!

  30. ann says:

Cheryl is still with us! I received the PayPal/digimax email today – it looked very convincing but didn't "feel" right. Very glad to have found this link!

  31. Melissa says:

I got mine too! I got mine just today and thought my children ordered something! I was freaking out..happy to see this is a scam and found you.

  32. Christy Boucher says:

Just got the same email today from a Cheryl Blake, too.

  33. Debbie Middleton says:

Got the same message from a Cheryl Blake and the EBay purchase of 48.75,I contacted PayPal and they advised they will use your name if they contact you,not hello Paypal member. Also called my bank and cancelled my bank card.

  34. Desertisle says:

Almost fell for this one too. They are getting so real, it's hard to tell the SCAM from the legit. Had to look up what a Digimax 130 was and found this blog. Checked my bank account and was relieved to discover it was all a scam. Beware! Thoroughly check everything before clicking on any e-mail that seems fishy. Luckily I never buy anything on e-bay so I was suspicious.

  35. Julie says:

1-23-08 daisysdream@yahoo.com also tried to pay for a Digimax 130. I didn't click anything in the email, but did go to paypal.com and forwarded the email to spoof@paypal.com and did get an email back from them stating "Thanks for taking an active role by reporting suspicious-looking emails.
The email you forwarded to us is a phishing email, and our security team is working to disable it."
I found this blog by googling digimax130, also.
    Thanks for all the comments.

  36. Rod says:

02-04-08, My boss received this email from daisydream101@yahoo.com, with Pamela Weppner as the ebay user name. He doesn't have a Paypal account, so he forwarded the email to me. A quick Google search sent me here.

    Thank you for the info!

  37. Johnny Hayes says:

I just recieved this e-mail today. Beware of it.

  38. jean says:

    02/09/08

I received an email from "daisydream101@yahoo.com" with the same "Pamela Weppner as the ebay user name. I "do not" have or never have had an account at Paypal. I thought it was strange that they said I owed money for some camera for some person I don't know!!! I clicked the dispute button and my computer informed me it was invalid website. I googled for the camera and found this blog. Thanks for the info. Can't trust anyone!!! Their always coming up with new ways to scam people out of their cash!!!

  39. MLBennett says:

I just sent a copy of this email to spoof@paypal.com and then I googled the item and came upon this site. I'm sure glad I didn't open anything in it or reply or try to dispute the thing. Man, people will try anything to make a buck or two!

Thanks for 'watchin' my back… hope I can return the favor sometime!

  40. Julie says:

This person is probabaly enjoying their noterity. My question is why doesen't Pay Pal the "secure site" that it says it is protect or block ID's that have given people problems or are deemed as phishing?

  41. Helga says:

I too got this and opened it and now I don't know if I should cancel my credit card. Anybody there to give me advice?

  42. Rich Brooks says:

    Helga,

Just opening it won't do anything, but if you logged into a fake PayPal site you may want to contact PayPal and change your username/password.

  43. Tom says:

FYI, its still around. The name used was Rebecca Farrow. I just got the same Digimax 130 email but addressed from "Paypal [account@secure.com]" and reported it to Paypal. Then I saw your page. Thanks for the info!

  44. Karen says:

Thanks for posting this. Yep, my husband got the same email today using the Digimax 130 and saying the buyer was Rebecca Farrow. The sad thing too is that there really is a Rebecca Farrow on ebay since 2003. She is a victim too. Per some recent info I just read, Don't ever click on a link in a suspicious email as it could install malware on your computer without you realizing it. That could open your computer up to ID theft as it searches for financial info such as credit card numbers, etc.
I contacted PayPal today and found that one key to a scam email is that PayPay uses your complete name and doesn't address you, like this email, as Dear PayPal Member.

  45. Lee says:

I just got the Rebecca Farrow one in my work e-mail. I think we got it because we use Pay Pal for membership and merchandise payment to our organization.

  46. BJ says:

We received the same "rebeccafarrow" e-mail today. Thanks for having a "scam" link under digimax search. That's how I found this out. We do have pay pal, and have had problems with fraud in the past, so I was extremely concerned. Thanks for giving us all the straight scoop.

  47. RA says:

Now "Perry Alvin" is selling this same Digimax 130. Don't worry about your c/c info, etc., since our user who received this email doesn't even have a Paypal account, and never has. So it is phishing, and your c/c and Paypal account are not really at risk.

  48. wil says:

I received the same one from "Perry Alvin" for$57.85. Goldthwaite, Tx.
Thanks for the 'scam link' under
    Digimax 130 google search.

  49. John Romano says:

I got that same email, and I was getting really frustrated, then I saw this webpage, you're a life saver!

  50. kmjh says:

I just recieved this email today, and my paypal account is actually limited now. It states that there was unauthorized use with my account and it is now limited. Is this all a complete scam and phishing or is some of it actually true where this person/person(s) has our info?
