Flytelog
Is it plagiarism when you steal from yourself? No, it’s re-purposing.

I was on vacation last week, relaxing with the family on Little Sebago in Maine, when I realized I still had to write this month’s flyte log, flyte’s monthly Web marketing email newsletter. So, I started with my list of Entrepreneurial Web Tools, expanded on each one, added a few new items, and presto! I had a new issue of flyte log.

This month’s flyte log also sports our new look, meaning we can finally get back to designing Web sites, business blogs and email newsletters for clients again!

If you don’t subscribe to flyte log, you can read Nine Indispensable Online Tools for Your Web-Based Business at our Web site or listen to the audio at flytecast, our Web marketing podcast. You can also subscribe to flyte log and then download for free:

  • 10 Questions to Ask Before Setting Up a Web Site,
  • The 11 Biggest Mistakes Small Business Bloggers Make, and
  • The 11 Commandments of Writing Web Copy for the Non-Copywriter

And, if you want an email newsletter as smart looking as this one, or if you’re looking to increase the subscriber base to your email newsletter, just drop us a line.

Megunticook Market – Camden, Maine’s Country Market

Monday, August 6th, 2007

Megunticookmarket
If you’re ever in Camden, a beautiful seaside town in mid-coast Maine, you have to stop by Megunticook Market, "Camden’s Country Market." Inside you’ll find a world-class market and deli, with an intriguing selection of wine & cheese, lots of local choices for fresh food, and daily specials.

Flyte launched a Web site, blog and email newsletter for Megunticook Market last week, and for owner Lani Temple. Besides the market and deli, Megunticook also offers catering for the Camden, Maine area, entertaining tips and more.

The site features mouth-watering food photos and includes a page called "Eat Local, Eat Fresh," which features lots of local, Maine food producers.

Whether in Camden or online, be sure to check out Megunticook Market.

eBay / PayPal Scam: Digimax 130

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

Paypalforgery
If you received an email about your recent eBay purchase of a Digimax 130, you don’t need to bother clicking the Dispute Transaction link.

This is an all-too-common scam to get you to give up your PayPal login information, so don’t fall for it.

In the version I received, the Payment Details included:

Amount: $47.85 USD

Transaction ID: 2LC956793J776333Y

Subject: Digimax 130

The seller was named as Edward Harrell, eBay user ID: scratchandgnaw2, although if there really is an Edward Harrell of Springtown, Texas, you can be sure he had nothing to do with this.

Use Article Marketing to Attract New Readers to Your Blog

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

You’ve been doing all the right things for promoting your blog:

  • writing quality content targeted to your audience
  • getting your blog listed in blog directories
  • leaving (intelligent) comments on related blogs
  • pinging news aggregators
  • offering RSS feeds and email feeds

and yet your traffic just isn’t climbing. What else can you try?

Have you tried article marketing? Article marketing is all about taking some of that same great content you’re putting on your blog and submitting it to an article distribution service, like iSnare, The Phantom Writers or Ezine Articles.

For a nominal fee you can distribute your articles to tens of thousands of editors who run Web sites and eZines. Along with your article you can include a "resource box" that can list your contact information, calls-to-action, and links back to your blog (or Web site.) This will help drive both visitors to your blog as well as improving it’s search engine visibility.

Tips:

  • Make sure your article is keyword rich and targeted towards your audience to get qualified leads back to your blog.
  • Make your call-to-action interesting enough to get readers at other sites click on the link back to your blog.

Did Someone Else Write Your Copy? Check This!

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

Twice in the last week I’ve heard from two people who have been cited for plagiarizing copy from other Web sites. Both seemed sincerely mortified and apologetic that it had occurred, and both told me that their copy had been created by a 3rd party.

Of course, now we know that it wasn’t created by a 3rd party, but rather stolen by a 3rd party. I feel sorry for these small business owners because I believe they didn’t know they were using copyrighted material. However, it’s kind of like when the baggage claim people ask you if you’re carrying a bag for anyone you don’t know.

If you have hired someone to write your copy for you, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to head over to Copyscape and plug in your home page or other pages on your site…this should show you if the content was actually original or plagiarized. With free tools like this available, you’ll never have to worry if your content was created…or swiped.
