A Simple Trick to Increase Email Subscriptions

This isn’t rocket surgery; this is a simple trick that I’m using with Constant Contact, but I’m guessing you could hack it to work with most email service providers.

Often if someone wasn’t ready to move forward with flyte, or if they had chosen another vendor but I thought I could help them down the road, I’d recommend they sign up for our free Web marketing email newsletter, flyte log, and give them a link to the page where they could sign up.

Few did.

Recently, I realized that when someone signs up for our email newsletter they’re taken to a specific Constant Contact hosted page. Let’s say their email was me@mycompany.com. They would be taken to http://visitor.constantcontact.com/optin.jsp?&m=1100418799537&ea=me%40mycompany.com.

That means that I could take any email address, convert the @ to %40, and add it to http://visitor.constantcontact.com/optin.jsp?&m=1100418799537&ea= to give them a personalized page that required just a click of a submit button to get the ball rolling.

So far, the results have been great. Most everyone has signed up. I could probably even create a script that would generate the appropriate link to any or all of my clients.

This isn’t spamming; they’re not being subscribed to my email newsletter unless they first click on the link I send them, then click on the submit button at the Web page, and then click on the confirmation link in the confirmation email. I’m just removing one of the barriers to entry, and apparently it’s doing the trick.

Good luck!

    Hey! That’s a cool idea!

How do you find where your &m= code is to replace for your own mailing list?

    Pattie,

Try subscribing to your own email newsletter to get the exact code. You should see it in the URL during the signup process. Hope that helps!
