Article Marketing: Good for Link Building and Search Engine Visibility

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Recently a lot of people have been asking me questions about article marketing: what is it and how does it work?

Article marketing is the act of writing short articles, generally 1,000 words or less, and getting them published on the Web or in ezines. Generally you don’t get paid for these articles, but the ROI is that you get links from the article to your Web site. Since incoming links from relevant Web pages helps your search engine visibility, this is a good thing.

First step is to write good quality articles, targeted at your best customers, with keyword rich titles that should do well on relevant searches at Google and the other search engines. You should also craft a good "resource box" which is sort of like an extended byline. You can include links to your site and calls-to-action. It’s best to use a call-to-action that’s relevant to the article you just wrote.

Next step is to get them published throughout the Web.

You can look for sites that publish articles that target your audience. This can be time consuming, but rewarding if you do it right. One good article in the right Web site can bring you loads of new traffic.

You can also use an article distribution company like iSnare or eZine Articles that will distribute your article (for a small fee) to hundreds or thousands of Web site editors. That can greatly expand your reach, although many of these sites don’t have much PageRank, and thus won’t give you a lot of link juice.

I wrote an article a while back on article marketing called Search Engine Success Through Article Marketing that still holds up. Check it out, then get writing!

Newagen Seaside Inn – Perfect for Your Maine Wedding

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Newagen
We recently launched a Web site for Newagen Seaside Inn, a beautiful seaside resort near Boothbay Harbor, Maine. As Frommer’s Travel Guide said,

It’s hard to convey the magnificence of the ocean views; maybe the best of any Inn’s in Maine.

And if you’ve ever stayed on the Maine coast, you know that’s saying something.

Visitors to the site can learn more about having their Maine wedding at Newagen, and get some inspiration from the Maine Wedding Photo Gallery.

Those not ready to tie the knot can learn more about having their corporate retreat or business meetings at Newagen, get a sense of the history of Newagen and the Inn, and check out featured packages.

Newagen gave us some great photography for the site as well that has been taken over the years. I mean, who doesn’t get hungry looking this photo from the dining section?

Lobster

Mmmmmm. Go on, check availability now. You know you want to.

Newagenblog
Newagen Seaside Inn is also actively marketing themselves through their new Maine Vacation and Wedding Blog
with categories such as Boothbay Harbor, Maine Vacations and Maine Weddings.

There’s some amazing photography taken by Jason Schlosser, our contact at Newagen and their chief blogger.

Jason–as an aside–worked at another Maine Inn where Cybele and I got married back in 2000. He is a consummate host. Just tell him Rich sent you. When he gives a quizzical look, say "Cybele’s husband." He’ll know who you’re talking about then.

Tired of Using Microsoft Office? Try These Alternatives

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

If you’re fed up with Microsoft Office, or you just can’t pony up the cash, there are a number of Web-based applications that offer much of what Office does for free or nearly free. As an additional benefit, these online tools come with great, collaborative tools built right in. Perfect for the type of business being done today.

Earlier this week I was interviewed on 207, Maine’s premier evening news magazine, as their "tech expert." We looked at Google Docs and Zoho, and had a few minutes left at the end to talk about Jott.com, my new favorite app.

As is always the case, the file is in Windows Media format. Please be patient, it takes forever to load.

Problems Opening Up Word Docs from the Internet Using Firefox

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Wordicon
I don’t know if other Mac users are having this problem, but recently anytime I download a Word doc from Basecamp, our online project management software, the file would appear on my desktop but it would refuse to open.

If I clicked on the downloaded document with Word open Word would come to the forefront sans document. (Nor would it appear in the Windows menu or the Open Recent menu.) If Word was closed, it would launch, but no file would open.

Firefoxicon
For those who care, I’m running Mac OS 10.5.3, Firefox 2.0.0.14, and Microsoft Word 12.1.0, part of Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac.

The Workaround:

If I copy and paste the URL of the word doc into Safari the file downloads to my computer and I can open it just fine. This is starting to happen to others in our company, and I think it’s a problem with Firefox, but I’m not positive. The rest of my staff is running Mac OS 10.4.x.

Anyway, I post this in case you’ve run into the same issue and need a workaround, until this bug gets fixed.

Update: Gloria from our office realized that if you right-click a Word doc from the Internet and "save as" you can open it no problem. Thanks, Gloria!

Is Twitter Really a Business Tool?

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Twitterlogo
It’s the first Tuesday of the month, and another issue of flyte log–our email newsletter on Web marketing–is arriving soon at an inbox near you.

This month we look at Twitter, a "micro-blogging" tool that allows you to share the minutiae of your life and follow the trifles of others…all in 140 characters bites or less.

Can this really be used for business communications, or is it best suited for letting people know what you had for lunch? The fact is, many professionals are using Twitter to share ideas, network, ask questions and connect.

Learn more about Twitter, and whether it fits into your business and marketing plans with our spanking new article, How to Use Twitter for Business.

If you’d like to see Twitter in actions you can see a couple of my most recent "tweets" in the top right column of flyte’s blog–at least for the foreseeable future. You can also follow me, Rich Brooks, at Twitter.

Why Your Business Blog Is Doomed to Fail

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

Lee Odden of Online Marketing Blog has a great post from last week called 5 Reasons Why Business Blogs Fail.

In all this hype about how so many blogs get started everyday is the lesser known fact that so many blogs are abandoned every day. And unlike a Web site that hasn’t been updated in a while, a blog starts to show its age right away. It’s a beast that needs continual care and feeding.

In my conversations with business owners, there’s often this idea that a blog is a silver bullet that will magically improve their search engine visibility, drive more qualified leads to their site, and make them fat and happy. While all can be true (although evidence suggests fat people are no more happy than the rest of us and often suffer from health issues making them less happy), it takes work.

I know that I’ll be using these five reasons (and a few I’ve picked up along the way) to help business owners disqualify themselves from starting a blog if they don’t have the time, resources and passion to keep a blog afloat.

By the way, if you’re not reading Online Marketing Blog and you’re serious about your Web marketing strategy, I strongly recommend you add it to your feeds.
