Barack Obama and Social Media

This past Monday I was on TV talking about President Barack Obama's mastery of the Internet and social media, how it affected the campaign and where you could find him online.

His Web site lists no fewer than 16 social media sites where he has a presence, and he reportedly raised about half a billion dollars in online donations.

Other politicians and small business owners can learn a lot from the successful blueprint his campaign created.

You can watch the segment on Barack Obama and social media further down in this post or at the 207 Web site.

I found your article very insightful — in particular the analysis that differentiates between participating in vs simply connecting via social media.

Yes, I would agree with the previous commenter in that your article managed what others may have missed. Barack Obama may just be using all the different social media tools to inform rather than engage.

Not that it is a bad thing considering his already immense popularity, but for newer startups, it should never be enough to just put up a website, open a Twitter or Facebook account and inform the audience of your latest promotion.

Barack Obama gets away with directly engaging the different subsets of internet consumers simply because of the way his campaign is run. Newer startups do not have that luxury as consumers, unless they have different social media tools that keep them engaged on you, have a very fickle mindset, and as such, you need to engage with them more, be it direct replies out in the open or physical meet-ups.
