Comment Spam is Killing My Blog Enthusiasm

I'm considering shutting off comments on my blog.

[Gasps of horror! Cries of disbelief!]

Alright, it probably won't happen. After all, I enjoy when people respond to something I've written. However, the spam to real comment ratio is getting worse and worse. Even though I've turned on moderation on my blog, it still takes time every day to ferret out the diamonds in the rough.

Yes, comments about Viagra and online pharmacies are often dropped into the junk folder without bothering me via email. However, there were probably 2 real comments out of the last 20 that made it through TypePad's sieve like filter.

Now, one bloger's comment spam is another blogger's feedback, so let me just say that if you're doing nothing but promoting your product and adding nothing to the conversation you won't find your comment posted here.

For example, if you're signing your name as "melbourne seo company", "SEO", or "seo Los Angeles" you're almost definitely getting the axe.

If your comment reads something like, "Hi, Very nice informative post. Thanks for sharing such a useful information with us…" or other bastardization of the English language with no benefit to the readers here, you're going to get the axe. Either keep the conversation moving along or just…move along.

Oh, and Jeff Paul and anyone related to Jeff Paul? This is not your blog. Your thinly veiled advertisements won't play here.

For anyone else who has real questions, real comments or real disagreements with anything I post here, please, let it fly! And I'll do my best to respond and keep the spammers at bay.

Typepad is not great about Spam. Their AntiSpam service is getting better, but its not great. WordPress has some better plugins like Bad Behavior that in combination will really help stop the Spam.

I can not tell if this is a wordpress blog, but if it is something that has decreased my comment spam by 80% is a section in your discussion area settings where you can put in a huge list of words to blacklist. (like vigara or .ru or .fr and all those fun ones.) Almost the only spam I have to deal with now is the weird string of long letters, which is so strange but must link somewhere else. Hope this helps.

    Rich,

I feel your pain. A spam-bot decided that my site was a good place to post 400 spam comments in a week.
The worst part about comment spammers is they are not even very creative about trying to sneak it past you.
I don't know much about typepad but for your wordpress clients there is a plugin that is a bit extreme but gets the job done to eliminate comment spam, WP-Ban. You can ban individual IP addresses of the frequent spammers.

I just started a site and it never really dawned on me that some people where not even reading my blogs. They where just posting messages with links. Like "Hey nice blog, LINK!". I got rid of them all and turned on comment moderation. I think that is in ridiculous that people do this.

I'm most definately going to try to say something interesting… Nice screen shot, i have no idea how you deal with the spam. Perhaps we should blame the *ame *urds who have too much money and/or time on their hands, and not enough brain cells to figure out that spamming isn't the way to Search Engine Optimization.
We can hope, or we create a few posts to educate the little bugs. Who knows, we might actually stop 1% of blog spamming, given that we don't give up on determination to continue in the futile fight.

I completely agree spam can be the most frustrating factor on a bloggers hard work considering we spend countless time working hard developing a blog we feel is interesting and worth the time for some one to read a post a comment that should portray what we also see and i understand people have there pros and cons but commenting a blog to try and get acouple visits isnt necessarily a good way to promote a site.

I do agree with you. It is really down your energy for blogging, if you get always spamming comments. People are only posting for the link, sometime even they didn’t see where they are posting and whether the blog is related to their service or not.
