I think both groups and answers are helpful. Groups has connected me with more people locally, where answers tends to cast a wider net. (Although this is also in part due to a lot of the groups I belong to are Maine-centric.)

I never used Google Reader, but kind of stumbled into iGoogle and then realized I could add any RSS feed to it.
