There’s No Pleasing Everyone…

As I was cleaning through piles in my office this evening I coincidentally found the feedback on my Social Media presentation at the NAPO (National Association of Professional Organizers) Conference from last year. I guess I had never read through this, because I don’t remember seeing it before.

The reviews were generally pretty good, but I got a laugh when I read through the comments. Here’s a sampling:

  • Very basic information was given.
  • Am still in learning mode and so some of this was above my head.
  • Material presented in a clear, concise manner. Not too basic, nor too technical.
  • Way too much content for a 90 minute session. Make sure to have Rich back for a pre-conference workshop next year.
  • I already knew quite a bit about social media sites. I was hoping to learn specifically how to use these sites to attract more customers, rather than connecting with people I already know. I only got a little of that.
  • Fantastic session; just what I needed and wanted–surpassed my expectations.

And my personal favorite:

  • His unprofessional attire was a turn off.

That’s the last time I wear my Spider-Man jammies to a speaking gig.

I did not attend your conference session, but I do have the CD and found the information valuable. I think it is hard to speak to a group as diverse as a room full of NAPO members and have them all be on the same page technologically. There were things in the presentation I already knew, but I also learned a lot. I took into consideration that there were people in the room you had to define parameters for (What’s a blog?) and people in the room who already knew WAY more than me and weren’t lost when you used certain acronyms (which you explained when someone was brave enough to (gasp) ask!) Honestly, it was a good mix from my perspective.
And since I didn’t attend the session but only have the recording I cannot comment on your manner of dress. However, I must say, if someone was presenting from their Spidey pjs, I think I would sit up and take notice.

And just to be clear, I *loved* speaking for NAPO! I’ve spoken for your group a couple of times, and it’s one of the most energetic audiences I’ve ever seen. Plus, there’s the 99 to 1 woman to man ratio, which is nice. Hope to see you all in San Diego in 2011!

    Rich-
Enjoyed your presentation at the 2009 NAPO Conference…And, you’re right, there is no pleasing everyone. hahaha. I received similar opposing comments like “way too technical” and then “I knew all of this already”. They must have approved of my attire though! ;)

    Rich,

Marketing is all about authenticity these days, whether we’re talking about a personal brand, a corporate brand, or a small business brand – you and I both know that.

I don’t trust a marketer in a suit. I think it makes them look shiesty. (Is that even a word? Lol!) Your attire actually would make me trust you and listen to you more because you are being real, and you look the part.

As a young person who has lived almost my entire life online, I know that the web is about relationships, not customers. Those relationships that you cultivate in the social space will generate friends who will be customers because they like you.

    Nice work, Rich.

How funny. I ran across this and just had to laugh. I’m a NAPO member too – and it’s such an interesting mix of people! Going to a NAPO Conference and BlogWorld are two totally different areas. I like that you put the “casual” into your presentation when it came to your dress. You were totally authentic to who you are – which is what social media is all about! Completely cool!
