Cheap Registrars: The High Cost of Saving Money

When clients who are buying a new domain ask me where to go I always recommend either GoDaddy or Network Solutions. If they ask why I tell them that both offer all the services they’ll need and they offer 24/7 tech support.

(At flyte we use GoDaddy because of it’s pricing and despite it’s terrible user interface. Their booth babes don’t figure in one way or the other.)

Just recently this came up with another client. She already had a registrar when she approached us, so we didn’t change anything but her hosting. As it turned out, she had her domain registered for three years; on record it will expire about a year from last week.

Regardless, she started getting alerts from her no-name registrar that her domain was expiring this year. She decided to take no chances and visited the site to renew. However, when she tried to renew the site responded that there was nothing to renew. Still, she got those emails.

When the date in question passed–unfortunately on a weekend–her site went down. The no-name registrar was located in another country and didn’t answer its phones. Even during the week her calls went to voicemail.

Ultimately we got in touch with the registrar and got the Web site back up and running, and are moving her to a more well-known, well-established and always-open domain registrar. I can’t calculate the time, energy and money wasted on saving a few bucks over the course of the year, not to mention the stress.

We all want to save money, but when it comes to registrars, it’s no time to be penny wise and pound foolish.

    Dear Rich:

I agree that Go Daddy is excellent. I do take exception to referring to Go Daddy’s female employees as booth babes though. These women are not objects. They are people. It is a very sexist comment and really quite demeaning to women in general. Yes, Go Daddy does promote attractive women in their marketing, but that doesn’t give you the right to demean them.

I will still read your blog and follow you on Twitter, but do me, other women and your own female employees a favour and show some respect. This reference reflects poorly on you and your attitude to women and can get you in hot water.

    Thanks, Courtenay

    Courtenay,

Thanks for the feedback; my comment was not to objectify women, but a passing comment on how GoDaddy does. If you don’t think GoDaddy treats women like objects, just Google “godaddy images” and look through the photos.

My comment was that I don’t choose GoDaddy because they hire beautiful women as spokepersons, but for their good pricing and better service.

There is nothing wrong with GoDaddy or Network Solutions for a smaller or static web site. But develop a large interactive merchant site and you’ll descover that both services fall short. I discovered this fact myself with both hosting companys and have since moved on to one of those “no name” hosts that has great service, fast servers and plenty of bandwidth.

And the moral to my post? Don’t assume that “brand name” is better. More often than not they just did a better job with marketing than the other guys.

Tom, I’m not saying GoDaddy or NetSol are good (or bad) hosts, just complimenting them on their top notch registrar services. That being said, although they’re not my first choice, when we’ve inherited them as hosting companies from clients we’ve been satisfied.

Godaddy.com is the perfect place to go if you are just starting to publish on the web or even if you’re maintaining a small online business.
