How to Post To Your Facebook Business Page As You (And Not As Your Business)

If your company has a business page on Facebook and your an administrator, you’ve probably realized that whenever you post to the wall, it appears to come from your business, and not you. I.e., if I post to the flyte new media page on Facebook it gets posted as if flyte new media wrote it and not Rich Brooks.

Then I saw Jaica Kinsman post to our Social Media FTW page as herself, so I asked her how to do it.

That answer was the basis of this video I created called How to Comment as You on Your Facebook Business Page. (I’m happy with neither the name of the video or this blog post, but I digress.)

Hopefully that helps with something you’ve been struggling with.

UPDATE: You can now post, comment or like something on your business page as yourself.

Great video. I’d been wondering how to do that.

It’s also important to have your pages “wall” set to show all posts, not just posts by page.

Thanks for this tip, very helpful!

Can you tell me how to post on another business’s FB page as my business (The Beachmere Inn), rather than as me the administrator. I would like to have biz to biz conversations, but seem to only be able to do so under my admin page, which is also my personal FB page. Thanks

I have the exact same question as Sarah.

I’m working on a friend’s business page and they don’t want it tied to their personal accounts, yet they want the ability to post on other business/personal pages using their business name. Just a biz to biz conversation like Sarah mentioned. I don’t believe it’s possible but thought I would check too. If Facebook allowed business pages all of the same functionality as personal pages, there probably would be a huge decrease in businesses paying for ads for additional exposure on that particular network.

Anyway, I would love to hear the answer to Sarah’s question as well!

    Thanks, Amy

Amy, check out the following post: http://www.flyteblog.com/flyte/2010/09/posting-to-a-business-page-from-your-business-facebook-tips.html

I think that will answer your and Sarah’s question.

If they want to post as their business, they’ll need to be an administrator. However, FB hides the administrator, so there’s no visible sign. Your business fans can’t see any of your profile info unless they’re also your friend.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Rich,

Thanks for covering this topic, I really appreciate it. I’m glad to know business pages have this ability.

I have one last question. Can you post as a business on other pages if you don’t have a personal profile/page? My friend does not have a personal page but is the administrator for the account. I watched your video and immediately tried this on his business page and was unsuccessful. It’s either too early in the morning for me to be attempting to work, or I’ve hit another snag. I type in the @ + the name of the business (which I have already become a fan of) and a link does not appear. Hmmm….

I’ll continue working away at this. Thanks again for all your help.

    Amy,

I know there are limits to what you can do with a business page that’s not connected to a personal profile, so that may be one of the limitations.

As far as the @ goes, make sure that the page is a fan of the page, not the person, and sometimes you may need to refresh the page or wait a few minutes.

Hey Rich & Jaica – How do you comment on a thread that’s posted to your business page, as yourself & not as the admin? Is there a way? Do you actually have to change your admin settings to do the post? <-that scares me a bit… Great video post! Thanks! :) Heather DeSimone

  • http://twitter.com/therichbrooks therichbrooks

Heather, right now you can’t without removing yourself as admin (which I don’t believe is possible if you were the creator of the page.)

Instead I’d suggest just commenting as your business, but sign it as you.

  • Ivyandlace1980

Having the same issue that Sarah posted. I know other small businesses that can post to other pages using your (@) trick from there business page…but I can’t seem to get it to work.

  • http://twitter.com/therichbrooks therichbrooks

You may have to personally like the page as well as having it as your business’s favorites to be able to @ it.

  • http://twitter.com/rafabkny Rafael Ramos

When you use the @ function from your personal profile to post a message on your business page do all of your personal friends get that message as well or just the people who liked your business page?

  • http://twitter.com/therichbrooks therichbrooks

    Rafael,

Your friends won’t “get” the message, but they might see it in their feed. Non-friends who like (or even visit) the page should be able to see it on the page wall.

  • http://www.adavidcreation.com/blog David

Rich: Excellent video. I will give this a try. I’ve yesterday that there is a way to link several employees to a business fan page (not just an admin setting) and heard it was “new.” Do you know anything about that? Also, would be nice if you can comment on other facebook postings with your company name instead of your personal name. Do you know how to do that?

  • http://twitter.com/therichbrooks therichbrooks

David, I haven’t heard about that (yet.) Not sure what the benefits would be, but maybe it’s something like what LinkedIn already has in place where people are connected to their businesses.

You can’t comment on another page’s post, but if you post to your business page and @ the company’s page in question you should be able to leave a comment from you on their wall. Give it a try!

  • Sue

Quick question regarding business pages on FB. My client has a personal page (set up with their business name as the “name” on the page), and then a business page that branches off that. My client wants to be able to post updates to the business page via his mobile devices – is that at all possible, or does he need to set up a new page and make it a business page, not personal? Any input is appreciated.

  • http://twitter.com/therichbrooks therichbrooks

Take a look at Hootsuite. I’ve been able to post updates to the flyte new media page (http://www.facebook.com/flytenewmedia) via my iPhone using Hootsuite. It’s not completely seamless; if you want to post photos I believe you have to connect it to at least one more Twitter or Facebook account, but it works otherwise.

  • Sue

Thanks, Rich – we’ll give that a shot. On another note, though, what if we were to take down the existing personal profile with the business page attached, and just start over, with a business profile? We’d be able to post to the business profile, then, wouldn’t we?

  • http://twitter.com/therichbrooks therichbrooks

Sue, not sure the two items are connected. I’d only recommend taking down the current page if you don’t have many followers. There’s a benefit to linking a business page to a profile, as FB limits some of the tools for business pages that are “unaffiliated.”

In short, you won’t solve *this* issue by starting over.

  • http://twitter.com/therichbrooks therichbrooks

Update: you can now post, comment or like as yourself on a page you admin: http://www.flyteblog.com/flyte/2011/02/post-to-your-facebook-business-page-as-you-and-more.html

  • http://www.facebook.com/vikki.baptiste Vikki Nichols Baptiste

Ahhhh! Interesting! My quandry is how to reply to a post on your page, as yourself.

  • http://twitter.com/therichbrooks therichbrooks

    Vikki,

The same way. Just make sure you’re logged in as yourself and not your business.

  • http://www.facebook.com/cruisemaven Sherry

Thank you very much for posting the video – it worked great. I found that after my page post was done, I was able to go back into the profile post and change the “lock” setting back to my original custom who-sees-what setting.  To double check, I went back to my page post and it had not disappeared.

    Thanks again.

  • Sherry

I stand corrected…it took awhile, but the post did disappear from my business page after changing the lock setting on my profile’s post.

  • Tasman Hayes

Thanks Rich for the clear instructions in your video. Classy!  :-)

Rich, I just read your report “11 Biggest Mistakes Small Business Bloggers Make”.

It’s clear & simple. Business saavy. Excellent presentation. Well put together, but not so polished that the life’s been wrung out of it (a la corporate). Technically sound. Readable. Just the right amount of information. Focussed on what’s essential. Contains experience, not theory. Gives practical actions.Wow! I’ve read many, many articles on blogging, but yours is the best. You’re a great all rounder Rich! I’m looking forward to seeing of your work.I’m going to have to lift my game. Perhaps wait a few months before you checkout my sites…  :-D

Glad you got a lot out of it. Just rewrote the 10 Questions to Ask Before Setting Up a Website…might be a bit basic for you, but it’s also a free download once you’ve subscribed to our email newsletter.

  • http://blog.darcykieran.ca Darcy Kieran

    Clear instructions. Well done. Thanks!

Problem is… Any discussion following that post will be happening on your personal profile, not on the company page.

The only real way of doing it seems to be creating another Facebook profile (which, in theory, Facebook doesn’t want you to do) to be used as the page admin, and then keep your real personal profile as a non-administrator of the page.

Facebook needs to fix this so that we can do it without jumping through hula-hoops…

  • http://twitter.com/therichbrooks therichbrooks

    Darcy,

This post is a little out of date, as is just about anything that’s more than 1 week old about Facebook. :P

You can post to your Facebook page as yourself now and have all the conversation appear on that page. You may also see some of that activity appear on your own page, but that’s not surprising.

Just make sure you’re logged in as yourself (and not your page.) If that doesn’t seem to work, check out this post: http://www.flyteblog.com/flyte/2011/09/why-cant-i-post-to-my-facebook-page-as-myself.html

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rae-Fujioka/1489641745 Rae Fujioka

So it’s a year later, but instead of saying “Everyone”, it says “Public.”  Though I’m logged in as myself then going to the business page, making a comment and pressing Public, it still shows my post as the adminstrator.  My co-administrator does not have this problem.   help??
