Should You Attend the Social Media Success Summit?

Monday, March 26th, 2012

Social Media Success Summit 2012Can you really learn social media at a virtual event?

A few years ago I attended the first Social Media Success Summit (aff). It was a virtual event where you could “attend” from your desktop, watching social media experts talk about Twitter, Facebook and blogging.

As you can see from the video below, I had my doubts of what I could actually gain from a virtual event, but I took the chance and signed up.

It’s no exaggeration that the Social Media Success Summit changed the way I approached social media marketing, and thus the way I ran my business.

It was the best $300 I ever spent.

So flash forward a few years, and now I’m presenting at SMSS2012. Why they let some guy from Maine speak on the same virtual stage as Mari Smith, Brian Solis, Mike Stelzner, Chris Brogan, Amy Porterfield, C.C. Chapman and like twenty other experts I’ll never know.

Bottom line is that if you’ve been on the fence about attending the Social Media Success Summit, I can tell you from firsthand experience that it contains amazing content from some of the most knowledgeable people around. Just take a look at the full line up and topics.

If you’re running your own business, or you’re in marketing, or you’ve been recently given the title of social media manager there’s no better resource than SMSS. Take a peek at the video below and I hope to see you in May

The Ultimate Guide to Blogging for SEO

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Contributor! 2x Better Than Participant

If you’re looking for the “ultimate guide to blogging for SEO,” look no further than this recent post that I contributed to the Social Media Examiner.

In it, you’ll find a whole bunch of great tips, tricks, plugins, resources and tactics so that your blog will rank higher, drive more qualified leads to your site, and allow you to conquer the universe. (Known universe–ed.)

The title they gave my post, Ultimate Blogger’s Guide to Search Engine Optimization, was not my idea. The title makes it sound like this guide to SEO is from the Ultimate Blogger. I’m good, but ultimate? Not there yet.

In other news, they sent over this cool badge of “Scout,” the SME mascot for being a regular contributor to Social Media Examiner, which is pretty sweet.

They also asked me what my next topic will be, and I’m stumped. If you have any suggestions, please let me know! What’s the one thing in social media you’d like to know more about?

Best answer gets a hug or a tour of the flyte new media offices…your call.

Developing a Content Strategy for Social Media

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Yes, I know I’ve been remiss in blogging these past two weeks. I’ve been on vacation and was for the most part unplugged. (You should try it, it’s nice.)

Before I jump back into blogging for flyte, just wanted to give you a heads up about a big article I wrote for the Social Media Examiner called How to Develop a Social Media Content Strategy.

It’s got lots of quotes, examples, photos and even a fold-in section, kind of like the back page of Mad Magazine back in the day.

So, please, go check it out, like it, share it, spread it around like Velveeta on a cracker. That’s what it’s there for.

All Your Blogging Questions Answered This Friday!

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

If you’ve got a blogging question you can get it answered this Friday.

As part of “Expert Friday” I’ll be answering questions for Social Media Examiner on their Facebook page. (I put quotes around “Expert Friday” because they have clearly run out of experts or just everyone was out of town this weekend.)

Here’s how it works:

  • At 1pm ET on Friday, 11/19/2010, you visit Social Media Examiner’s page on Facebook.
  • You post your questions to the wall (or watch if they solicit questions throughout the day).
  • You make sure your questions are easy to answer and will make me look wicked smaht when I answer them.
  • You “like” every reply I give, including adding comments like, “that was the most precise, intelligent answer that could have been given. Bravo!
  • Everyone wins.

To post a question I’m pretty sure you’ll need to “like” Social Media Examiner on Facebook, but that should be too big a deal, right?

See you on Friday!

A Non-Profits Guide to Social Media Success

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Today I have a new post at the Social Media Examiner, a blog about all things social media.

Today’s post is called 21 Ways Non-Profits Can Leverage Social Media, and puts together a decent sized list of different methods that not-for-profits can utilize tools like Twitter, Facebook, Slideshare and others to engage their audience, help people and increase donations.

It’s certainly not an exhaustive list, but if your non-profit has been struggling with how to engage in social media, this should be a good place to start.

Last week flyte new media sponsored the Social Media Breakfast Maine, um breakfast, where the topic was social media for non-profits. As sponsor I got a couple of minutes to speak at the beginning of the event, and talked about the need for non-profits to stop thinking of themselves as non-profits, and start thinking of themselves as entrepreneurs with a mission. By reframing who you are, you are more willing to take risks, try new communication tools, and reach your audience on a deeper level.

Please check out the article, leave your thoughts, approval or arguments in the comments section, and share with friends in the non-profit world if you feel like it.

Social Media Reading for Retail Shops

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Crazy week here at flyte new media while we get ready for tomorrow’s Social Media FTW Fall Conference. Rich (me!) is speaking and flyte is a sponsor. Be sure to swing by our booth and say “howdy!” if you’re going.

Since I’m a little distracted with all the planning, and falling down on my blogging duties, why don’t you check out a recent blog post I did for Social Media Examiner called How to Use Facebook and Twitter to Drive Traffic to Your Retail Shop. And don’t be shy with that retweet button!

Hope to be back to blogging by Friday. Enjoy the rest of your week, and I hope to see you all at Social Media FTW tomorrow! (#ftw2010)

How to Ignore Everything The Experts Say And Still Succeed In Social Media (Except This One Thing)

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

This article originally appeared in the Social Media Examiner where I am sometimes blessed to be a guest blogger. If you’ve already read it, check out my new article there called 12 Ways to Market Your Event with Social Media.

There are a lot of social media experts out there—including the ones who claim there’s no such thing as a “social media expert”—that are telling us how social media works, how it doesn’t work, and how we all must behave in the social media arena.

Much of this advice is framed as “universal truths” that every business must follow. Unfortunately, a lot of it is based on the expert’s personal experience that may not be appropriate for you. Even the most well intended advice is often off the mark when it comes to your business.

There’s nothing wrong with sage advice, but when guidelines become rules they need to be re-examined and scrutinized.

What follows are some of the oft-quoted “rules” that you need to question as you use social media for your own business.

Web Marketing Articles Worth Reading – Week of 4/26/10

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Judging by the title of this post, this might become a weekly event. I certainly hope so. I tweet out a number of good articles I read each week, but I know that many of the people who read and subscribe to this blog aren’t on Twitter (shame!) or aren’t following me (double shame!!) or just missed these tweets (understood.)

So, here are some of my favorite, most tweetable web marketing posts and articles from the past week.

Should You UnGoogle Your Online Marketing – This post by Lee Odden at Online Marketing Blog doesn’t dismiss the need of search engine optimization, but rather puts the emphasis on spreading your marketing energy around.

Use Foursquare to Catch a Pair of Jimmy Choos – Thank you Sex and the City for adding Jimmy Choos to the flotsam and jetsam in my head that keeps me from remembering people’s names at networking events. In any case, this Mashable post by Jolie O’Dell reports on a clever marketing campaign Jimmy Choos put on involving the location based app FourSquare. What could your business be doing with location based app marketing?

21 Creative Ways To Increase Your Facebook FanbaseMari Smith put up this post at Social Media Examiner; it’s a great mix of novel and tried & true methods of increasing the number of fans–or likes, or whatever Facebook is calling it this week–your brand has at Facebook. It even inspired me to try some FB ads for flyte new media.

If you’ve liked this post, maybe you could “like” flyte new media on Facebook as well. You don’t even have to like, leave this post, just click “Like” below.
