What’s the Best Blogging Platform? WordPress vs. Joomla vs. TypePad

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Best Blogging Platform“What’s the best platform for blogging?” is a question I hear from time to time. Judging by the search volume surrounding “best blogging platform” and related searches like “wordpress vs. joomla” and “wordpress vs. typepad” it’s a question that a lot of business bloggers struggle with.

On one hand, the best blog platform for you is the one you feel most comfortable using. That being said, our own web marketing blog and the blogs we build for our clients are all on WordPress. In fact, we’re so enamored of WordPress we’ve even installed it as the blog of choice on Joomla web sites that we’ve built.

Here’s why we choose WordPress time and again:

  • Ease of setup: In fact, with so many hosting companies offering WordPress specific accounts, chances are it’s already set up on a hosting company near you.
  • Ease of use: Whenever we’re talking about blogging, or using WordPress as a CMS, I tell people, “if you know how to use Word then you have 95% of the skills you need, and we’ll train you in the last 5%.
  • Wealth of plugins: Chances are if you want WordPress to do something, someone else wanted it, too, and built a plugin for it. From SEO to e-commerce to member-driven forums, there’s a plugin for that.

This isn’t to say that you can’t succeed without WordPress. There are certainly successful blogs being run on other platforms out there. But as we continue to look at other blog platforms, we keep on coming back to WordPress.

Whatever blogging platform you choose, make sure it has these required features:

  • Your domain name: If you’re blogging for business, it’s a deal breaker to have the URL be something like mycompany.typepad.com, mycompany.blogger.com or even mycompany.wordpress.com. You need to run the blog under your own domain name, whether it’s a standalone URL like mycompanyblog.com, or part of your regular site like mycompany.com/blog or blog.mycompany.com. This is especially important for SEO and if you ever decide to move to a different blogging platform.
  • Your branding: Nothing says fly-by-night like a design that looks like Yet Another WordPress Blog. Have your web designer/developer create a custom template for your blog so that it complements the rest of your corporate branding.
  • Plugins & support: Over time you’ll want to be able to add new features, like a search, email signup, e-commerce, calendar, etc. If your blog is on a popular platform, chances are there will be support for plugins that will allow your blog to scale with your business.

There are certainly other important features, such as support for RSS, RSS > email, categories, archives, search and more, but at this point in the history of blogging, we hope that any new blogging platforms would come with these features.

Maine Huts & Trails – Outdoor Adventure Vacations in Maine

Monday, December 20th, 2010

When we first met with Maine Huts & Trails I had a completely wrong-headed idea of what the huts were like.

I imagined having to cross-country ski into the woods where I would find a cold, weather-beaten cabin with a wood stove that I would have to get going. (If that’s your perfect vacation, great! Please text me your photos as I sip margarita’s by the pool.)

While cross-country skiing and outdoor adventure is still part of what makes Maine Huts such a fantastic vacation, the “huts” themselves are brand new facilities with plenty of amenities, all without losing the “roughing it” vibe people are looking for.

The huts are staffed, heated, have showers, electricity, and offer a meal plan. The huts are open year-round, with activities for all seasons. Maine Huts & Trails members get added benefits, free snowshoes and canoe rentals, discounts on rooms, for a low annual fee for both individuals and families. (You can become a member here.)

Flyte rebuilt the web site, created a cleaner interface, and improved the functionality for site visitors. It’s easy now for site visitors to book their adventure, plan their trip, download trail maps and plan for year-round activities. The site was built on WordPress, an easy-to-use content management system that allows Maine Huts to add, edit and delete content, create new pages, upload photos and embed video. Everything the modern web site owner could want. ;)

Flyte also provided search engine optimization and social media strategy, which will continue after the launch to increase the online visibility of the site and attract more visitors.

If you’re looking for an outdoor Maine vacation, regardless of the season, be sure to check out Maine Huts & Trails.

Sales Strategy & Training with Carpenter & Associates

Monday, October 11th, 2010

No business can survive without sales, but too many people believe that sales is a innate talent, or that advertising can replace the need for a sales team, or that all sales are good sales.

Carpenter & Associates focuses on growing your sales profitably. They offer sales training that is aligned with your company’s goals, strategies and planning. They can help you develop a sales strategy that is built on determining which part of your business is most profitable and concentrating on executing on that strategy.

There’s a lot of great content on the web site, including best practices for sales solutions and a new sales blog written by company president Scott Carpenter.

Also, while you’re improving your own bottom line, you’re improving the bottom line of others as well: 5% of net profits go to the Poverty Action Lab at MIT.

This site–like most sites coming out of flyte these days–was built on a content management system (CMS), so that Carpenter & Associates can update the site in house as simply as they would update a Word document. In this case it was WordPress, a powerful, flexible CMS that is the perfect blogging tool.

Flyte’s creative director, Ryan Goan, also created Carpenter & Associates’ new logo as well as designing the business cards and stationary.

If you’re looking grow your sales profitably, be sure to talk to Carpenter & Associates.

Nationwide Research Company Launches New Site

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Last week we launched a new web site for Nationwide Research Company (NRC), a source for court documents and archived records.

NRC’s services include document retrieval, on-site searches, corporate research, case monitoring, chapter 11 filings and more. In short, if you need documents, this is your one-stop shop.

NRC wanted to have the ability to add, edit and delete content on their site as needed, so we built the site on WordPress, an open-source blogging/content management system (CMS). Now they can log in and update information as they need to, without having to run everything through some pricey web developer. (Sniff!)

With offices on both the left and right coast, that also helps keep down costs as they don’t need to buy multiple copies of HTML editing software for multiple people; instead any modern browser will allow them to keep the information on their web site fresh…something the search engines (and your customers) love to see.

If you need court documents or chapter 11 filings, be sure to check out Nationwide Research Company. If you need a custom-designed web site on a content management system, we’d love to answer your questions.

The Heritage of Alaska on WordPress: Goldbelt Heritage

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Last week flyte launched a WordPress web site for the Goldbelt Heritage Foundation, the 3rd web site we’ve completed for Goldbelt Corporation, all done on WordPress so that the company can update and manage their own web presence.

Visitors to the site can learn more about the Tlinglit language preservation project, learn about upcoming cultural events, and even see and hear examples of the Tlinglit language being spoken.

Previous work for Goldbelt included the Goldbelt Tours web site and the Goldbelt Corporate site.

Artist Designed Ribbon Belts from Belted Cow

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Flyte recently launched a newly designed website for Belted Cow, a Maine company selling ribbon belts inspired and created by artists.

Visitors to the site can shop for a wide variety of belts for adults or children. One of my favorite belts is The History of Streaking. (No, the irony is not lost on me.) There are plenty of gift ideas, especially if your loved one has a love of nautical-themed clothing or likes to keep his pants up with an homage to the Tour de France.

Pets aren’t forgotten, as many of the cool designs have been appropriated for collars and leashes.

The site offers an easy-to-use shopping cart and is powered by a hybrid of WordPress and flyte’s own custom e-commerce programming.

If you’ve been searching for a fun, whimsical way of keeping your pants from falling down–especially when everything ends up on YouTube these days–be sure to check out Belted Cow.

Maine Biotechnology Services Celebrates 20 Years with a Makeover

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Maine Biotechnology Services has been providing antibody products, development and production for over 20 years. Recently, they decided it was time for a web site makeover that would better reflect all of their new services.

If you’ve been searching for monoclonal & polyclonal antibodies–and really, who hasn’t?–you’ll be able to take advantage of MBS’s antibody products search. You can search by keyword or browse antibodies by category, such as human hormones, parasitic or tumor cancer markers.

Flyte put the new site on WordPress so MBS could manage the content inhouse, keeping down maintenance costs. In addition, we repurposed the blog software for a What’s New section that updates the home page automatically.

If you’re looking for Sheep Polyclonal Antibody to Bromodeoxyuridine-5 (BrdU)-HRP Conjugated, be sure to check out Maine Biotechnology Services. If you’re looking for a professional web site that you can update and maintain inhouse, please contact flyte.

WordPress Conversions: Beauty is More Than Skin Deep

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

360FuelCard, providers of fleet fuel cards that benefit the environment, liked the look of their Web site.

What they didn’t like is the lack of control they had. Every update had to be run through an outside developer, hindering their ability to quickly add content. It also became a cost issue: adding new pages was expensive, making them thing twice before adding new content to the site.

WordPress gave them that control, and is helping them keep a cap on expenses. We took their current design and ported it over to WordPress, the popular open-source blogging and content management system platform. We also added a blog, so they would have a powerful communication tool they could use to keep customers in the loop and engage new prospects.

They can now update any page, day or night, uploading new photos or embedding videos of their products in action. And they can do it inhouse without having to pay an outside provider.

If you need a fuel card that’s accepted at nearly 100% of fuel stations across the US and contributes to a cleaner environment with every fill-up, be sure to check out 360FuelCard.

If you need to gain control of your Web site, and reign in update fees, talk to flyte about converting your site to a content management system.

R3 Builders Rebuilds on WordPress FTW (for the win)

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

R3 Builders had a problem. R3 Builders is a well-respected construction company in California with a portfolio that includes restaurants, retail and commercial spaces.

Unfortunately, prospects couldn’t get to their site without Google or Firefox throwing up warnings about malicious code on their site. When their Web developers couldn’t seem to clean out the code and get the problem fixed, flyte stepped in.

We took the original designs of the site and rebuild it in WordPress, the popular open-source CMS/blogging platform. We relaunched the Web site, and then using Google Web master tools and other resources, resubmitted the site and got the blacklisting removed. Now people looking for a quality construction company in California will be able to find and visit R3 Builders.

Visitors can access R3′s construction portfolio, read about its commitment to sustainability and learn about their services from pre-construction through post-construction.

R3 is now able to concentrate on what they do best: building some of the best restaurant, retail and commercial buildings in California. Next up: increase the online visibility of R3 through SEO and other Web marketing campaigns.

The new site is an amazing resource for parents of children with LD, including:

The new site also sports tons of new articles on topics from treatment & support of LD to LD beyond the classroom.
