The Marketing Agents: Our First Responsive Design!

Friday, January 4th, 2013

For our first official responsive website we launched The Marketing Agents, a website and blog about digital marketing.

Responsive Web Design - The Marketing Agents

What is responsive web design, you ask?

Well, responsive web design is an approach to designing websites so that they are optimized for any type of screen or device.

As you can see in the image above, a different style sheet is served up depending on the screen resolution. The desktop/laptop has the widest footprint, but a slimmed down version is served up on the tablet, and a smart phone optimized version appears on the iPhone (or Droid, or Windows phone, etc.).

This was an especially tricky project because the original design was not meant to be responsive. Josh Fisher, our talented friend and illustrator, designed a traditional website (as I instructed!) We had planned on creating a mobile-friendly version with WP-Touch, a popular WordPress plug-in that creates smart phone optimized versions of WordPress blogs and websites.

However, because of the focus of The Marketing Agents–search, social, and mobile marketing–we decided to use it as a test subject for our journey into responsive web design. Andy Woznica, our über-talented WordPress developer, took it upon himself to make the site responsive, and he did a great job. (more…)

The New Instagram Web Profiles Are Here!

Instagram Rolls Out Web Profiles

The uber popular mobile app has created new web profiles for its users. Most profiles were created last week, however if you don’t see yours as of yet it should be live soon.

See a snapshot of my profile below…

The banner image, which looks strikingly similar to Facebook’s Timeline, has a slideshow affect as it rotates recently taken photos every few seconds. The profile itself is all photo content, just like we are used to seeing on the mobile app.

The new profiles will give users easy access to edit their profiles…

follow others..

and view, comment and like posts…

The new web profiles offer Instagram users ease of access and another visually appealing way to look at their Instagram profiles. However, you still must upload the photos from your mobile device.

To check out your own profile, type in instagram.com/(your username). And, to learn more about instagrams new web profiles visit the Instagram blog.

Share your Instagram URL with us in the comments section so we can follow you!

Halloween Apps for Your Mobile Phone

Friday, October 26th, 2012

imut8rCelebrating Halloween on the go? Need some mobile apps for your trick or treating? You’ve come to the right place.

Once again it was time for another hard-hitting segment on 207, Maine’s premiere evening news show.

The topic was Halloween apps on your smart phone or tablet.

Originally I pitched something on the European debt crisis, or whether we should continue farm subsidies, but they demurred.

Anyway, I digress.

I put together a few cool apps that can make for a truly frightful Halloween, whether you’re out trick-or-treating, waiting for little kids to show up, or hosting your own Halloween bash.

You can watch the video at WCSH or down below

The Halloween apps referenced in the segment include:

If there’s any Halloween apps you thought we should have included, let us know. There’s always Halloween 2013.

The Best Smart Phone Video Apps

Monday, August 20th, 2012

Example of Cinemagram

Smart phones take amazing videos, but with these apps you can take better videos, add cool filters, and edit on the go.

Many smart phones, including the iPhone and some Droid models, can take amazing quality videos…up to 1080p high-def videos, creating some amazing memories for you and your family.

Plus, with some free and inexpensive downloadable apps, you can take your inner Coppola to the next level.

Last week I was on 207, the evening news program on the NBC affiliates here in Maine, talking about these video apps.

We looked at Camera Plus Pro for taking better videos, iSupr8 for adding some cool filters, and iMovie for editing right from your phone.

Interestingly, we didn’t have time to look at Cinemagram, which was my catalyst for pitching this topic in the first place!

You can watch the video below or check it out on the 207 website.

By the way, we’re always looking for new topics in the realm of web, tech and social media, so if you have any suggestions, let me know!

Ultimately, I’d like to direct.

Do You Need a Mobile Website?

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

Are you losing business because your website isn’t mobile ready?

Dear Rich,

Recently a few people have told me how difficult it is to use my website on a mobile device. Should I be worried? What should I do?

Mobile-less in Machais

Dear Mobile-less,

A recent study predicted that by 2014 more than half of your website traffic will be coming through a mobile device, either a smart phone or tablet.

So the question isn’t if, but when.
